Ūla Šukytė’s exhibition “1539 Pieces” is part of a series of exhibitions featuring the final projects of master’s students from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, which are scattered throughout the city, and marks the young artist’s debut at “Medūza”.

At the heart of the exhibition, designed specifically for the “Medūza” vaults—which date back to the 16th century—is the installation “When There Are So Many Units”. In it, the artist has combined 1534 clay roof tiles, each meticulously hand-molded, into a wave-like form, frozen in time, which fills the arched exhibition space. Roof tiles, which typically cover and protect a house, lose their architectural function and are transformed into a rippling underground seascape. This motif is accompanied by five wooden sculptures, “Exhausted I–V”, leaning against the walls. The objects, created from materials found in an old house, seem to suggest anthropomorphic forms with their broken shapes. Yet upon closer inspection, they remain silent, closed off, and indifferent to the gaze directed at them. Fragments of wood that once supported a structure now seek support themselves.

In this exhibition, the artist disrupts the relationship between fragment and whole, allowing the material of the works to lead the imagination. The dreamlike and fragmentary mise-en-scène she creates encourages the viewer to weave narratives within it, to recognize characters in the forms of the sculptures, and to transport oneself into a dense, romantic imaginary landscape. Yet the works ultimately resist any image imposed upon them. Instead, they confront the viewer with what remains directly before their eyes: the tiles, the found objects, their weight, surfaces, materials and forms. At the same time, they tempt the imagination while refusing to be fully possessed by it.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ūla Šukytė is an interdisciplinary artist working across sculpture, ceramics, and spatial installation. She completed her studies at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Sculpture and a Master's degree in Ceramics. Her work has been presented in international projects “White Dunes,” “Algae Unveiled,” and “Elements” in Milan, and “Rituals” in Venice.

Ūlos Šukytės paroda „1539 vienetai“ yra po miestą pasklidusios Vilniaus dailės akademijos magistro studentų baigiamųjų darbų parodos dalis ir jaunosios kartos kūrėjos debiutas „Medūzoje“.

Specialiai XVI a. menantiems „Medūzos“ požemiams sukurtos ekspozicijos centre – instaliacija „Kai tiek daug vienetų“. Joje tūkstantį penkis šimtus trisdešimt keturias metodiškai rankomis išlipdytas molio čerpes menininkė sujungė į skliautuotą ekspozicijos erdvę užpildančią, lyg laike sustingusią bangos formą. Čerpės, įprastai dengiančios ir saugančios namo stogą, kūrinyje praranda savo architektūrinę paskirtį ir virsta po žeme tyvuliuojančiu jūros peizažu. Šį vaizdinį lydi penkios į sienas parimusios medinės skulptūros „Pavargęs I–V“. Iš seno namo rastų sukurti objektai savo laužytomis figūromis tarsi sufleruoja antropomorfiškus pavidalus, tačiau priėjus arčiau išlieka nebylūs, uždari ir abejingi į juos nukreiptam žvilgsniui. Kitados konstrukciją laikę medžio fragmentai čia patys ieško atramos.

Parodoje menininkė sujaukia santykį tarp fragmento ir visumos, leisdama kūrinių materijai vesti vaizduotę. Jos sukurta sapniška ir fragmentiška mizanscena skatina joje įkurdinti pasakojimus, skulptūrų formose atpažinti personažus, vaizduotėje nusikelti į klampų romantinį peizažą. Vis dėlto kūriniai galiausiai nesutampa nė su vienu jiems primestu vaizdiniu. Jie grąžina žiūrovą prie to, kas lieka prieš akis: čerpių, rastų, jų svorio, paviršių, medžiagos ir formos. Kartu jie gundo vaizduotę, bet nesileidžia jos pasisavinami.

APIE PARODOS AUTORĘ

Ūla Šukytė yra tarpdisciplininio meno kūrėja, dirbanti skulptūros, keramikos ir erdvinės instaliacijos srityse. Baigė Vilniaus dailės akademijos, Skulptūros katedros bakalauro ir Keramikos katedros magistro studijas. Jos kūryba pristatyta personalinėje parodoje „Fantastiškai tikra“ Lietuvoje, taip pat tarptautiniuose projektuose „White dunes“, „Algae unveiled“ ir „Elements” Milane bei „Rituals” Venecijoje.
